More than simply a guidebook, Kindness For Life is a heartfelt invitation to cultivate deep-rooted kindness within ourselves and our children and watch it ripple out to the world around us.
I believe the world has too many critics, that the world needs more kindness, and that we all have a duty to pass kindness on to those around us. Starting at a young age, people should be instructed on the topic of kindness, see examples from their parents on how to live kindly, and be given opportunities to live out the instructions they learn.
The book is primarily written for parents. However, anyone who has ongoing, hands-on influence in children's lives, including grandparents, foster parents, aunts and uncles, social workers, and educators, will benefit.
Following an introduction chapter that gives a high-level overview of kindness, each chapter generally provides guidance and wisdom about its topic, practical applications, and reflective questions to ponder before moving on.
Chapter 1: Leading by Example
Chapter 2: Creating a Kindness-Focused Environment
Chapter 3: Fostering Kindness Through Communication
Chapter 4: Nurturing Empathy and Compassion in Children
Chapter 5: Handling Challenges and Setbacks with Kindness
Chapter 6: Cultivating a Kindness Mindset for Life
Chapter 7: Digital Kindness: Navigating the Online World
Chapter 8: Embracing Kindness as a Parent
Chapter 9: Kindness For Life
Appendix: Resources for Furthering Kindness
Endnotes
Each chapter has practical applications, strategies, exercises, and activities. Some are simple and quick, others are more project-based, requiring weeks of planning and implementation, and others are potentially life-long commitments you can make as a family/household.
We all have (or should have!) our gray-haired heroes who have gone before us and blazed a path. However, as a parent of teens/tweens, Charlie is a firm believer in hearing from those who are alongside him 'in the trenches,' as it were, of parenting. Additionally, his own children are some of the kindest people he knows, but he speaks humbly on the topic -- there are no guarantees! :-)
The book offers more recommendations than any family or household could implement at any one time to accommodate a broad and diverse range of circumstances. That said, the author and his family have engaged in several of the book's strategies.
Yes. At the end of the book is an appendix with resources for furthering kindness, including books, websites, and other online resources.
